Lindy and her husband - the mysterious Mr V - live in Paris but dream of a home in the countryside. They buy a house in Burgundy, and while Mr V deals with the renovation, Lindy enjoys getting to know the wildlife, including the eponymous dragonflies. From cats to hedgehogs, swallows, crows and.frogs: roses and lilac trees and homegrown vegetables, Lindy takes us through the seasons. We meet the residents of the commune, join in with local traditions, and are treated to some delicious recipes. Lindy draws us in to the simpler way of life, and I would love to join her in her beautiful garden. The book ends with a taster of book two, and I can't wait to read it. The author is down-to-earth, and her descriptions are marvelous, telling of her and hubby's lives trying to restore a beautiful old house in the Burgundy region of France -- part time! As she shares her discoveries of life in the French countryside, I could easily envision being there along with her. I highly recommend this memoir and eagerly look forward to book two! They found one in a small village—as usually needs a lot of work and they aren’t living there permanently they go on holidays and weekends. Lindy has a wonderful way with words and I feel like I am there and I see everything in colors as she describes it. They both do the minimum amount to the inside—to keep the flies and ants and other insects from invading—oh yeah—rats. She is stronger than I am but they love spending the time outside, the neighbors become friends in the first year. At the end of some chapters she leaves recipes some of which my dad used to make and some that I will. Thanks for a wonderful story and hurry up with book 2 please. I highly recommend this book. From the first, I was drawn in by the author's warm, relatable voice and I remained with her through every step of her adventure. I was immersed in the idyllic life of rural France and now long to visit. From home improvement to cooking, shopping, and eating, to her kitty and the critters that they encounter in their backyard, it was lovely to experience this French experience as if I was on the journey, too. I love that it's written in the present tense which makes it very different and personable; I feel like I'm there with Lindy with the sun on my face, smelling the plants in the garden, seeing the dragonflies which she describes so well. The spell of Les Libellules will weave it's magic around you as you read Lindy and Mr V's heart warming journey to the French countryside to fulfill their dream. She and her husband, Mr V have just bought a 300 year old ‘fairy tale, but sadly neglected. cottage’ in the Côte-d'Or area of Burgundy. It charts their first year in Les Libellules and describes their ongoing efforts to make the house habitable while retaining some of its traditional features. At the same time, they are tackling the overgrown garden and clearing the ‘mare’ to create a wildlife friendly pond. I loved every page that followed of her memoir, which chronicles the first year of her and her husband, Mr V, lovingly restoring the house and her garden. Over the year they adapt to many challenges from insect invasions, structural struggles, and battles with extreme weather. They also adapt to the changes from their life in Paris; befriending characters from the community, caring for its wandering cats, and embracing local traditions and festivals. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Janie -- A Beautiful Account : Lindy's memoir of her and Mr V's time spent at Les Libellules is beautifully written. Recording regular updates in her journal has allowed her to remember exactly how she felt at the time. She writes with honesty and a heartfelt appreciation that she and Mr V happened upon such a Burgundian treasure, regardless of its sad condition and the work involved in restoring it. I particularly loved her descriptions of the diverse wildlife and nature, which she viewed with such sensitivity and awareness and the local characters that gradually became their friends. There is someway to go with restoration and I have utmost admiration for her and Mr V taking on such a project, but never once being down-beaten by the enormity of the task they have taken on.
